Product Details

GLUCOBAY is an anti-diabetic used to control elevated blood glucose levels in patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.

 

Indications:

  • Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Dosage:

  • Initially 25 mg PO q 8 hr, at meals (with first bite)
  • Can increase to 50 or 100 mg PO q 8 hr at 4-8-wk intervals based on 1 hour postprandial glucose or glycosylated hemoglobin levels, and on tolerance.

Maximum Dose:

  • <60 kg: 50 mg q 8 hr
  • >60 kg: 100 mg q 8 hr

Onset of Action: 1 hour

Duration of Action: Average duration is 4 to 6 hours.

 

Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, flatulence
  • Fulminant hepatitis
  • Yellow colored eye or skin
  • Edema
  • Thrombocytopenia

Interactions:

  1. Interaction with Drugs: Interaction of Acarbose is seen in patients using corticosteroids, furesemide, gatifloxacin, aripiprazole
  2. Interaction with Diseases: Acarbose is not recommended in patients with impaired liver function, diabetic ketoacidosis and gastro intestinal disease.
  3. Interaction with Foods: No interactions with food is available

 

Contraindications:

  • Documented hypersensitivity to acarbose
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Cirrhosis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Colonic ulceration
  • Partial intestinal obstruction or predisposed to intestinal obstruction
  • Known marked absorptive impairment of GI

Warnings:

  • No clinical studies exist establishing conclusive evidence of macrovascular risk reduction with acarbose or any other anti-diabetic drug.
  • Concurrent use with sulfonylureas or insulin may result in hypoglycemia; treat hypoglycemia with oral glucose (dextrose), not sucrose (cane sugar).
  • Safety with alcohol: However, consumption of alcohol is not recommended in the patients with diabetes.
  • Pregnancy: Not recommended for pregnant women.
  • Lactation: Not recommended in breastfeeding women.

General Instructions:

  • Take the tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
  • It is advised to undergo blood sugar tests at regular intervals.
  • Patients is advised to carry a sugar candy to overcome unexpected lowered blood sugar levels.
  • The schedule and duration of use should not be changed without consulting a doctor.

Storage Conditions:

  • Store at room temperature, under 77°F (25ºC).
  • Keep it away from high temperatures.
