Product Details

FEBUSTAT 40MG Tablet is an antigout agent which is used to prevent gout attacks by reducing the uric acid production. It should be started at low doses and increase gradually. It is not recommended in the patients with the known history of allergy.

 

Indications

  • Gout (type of arthritis that causes severe pain, redness, and tenderness in joints) 
  • Chronic gout who have an inadequate response to optimal allopurinol therapy, who are intolerant to allopurinol, or for whom treatment is not advisable

Dosage:

  • Initial dose: 40 mg PO qDay. May increase to 80 mg PO qDay after 2 wk if serum uric acid <6 mg/dL is not achieved.
  • For severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min): Not to exceed 40 mg/day.
  • For severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh class C): Data not available; use with caution.

Onset of Action: The peak effect of this medicine can be observed in 1 to 1.5 hours.

Duration of Action: The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of 15 to 24 hours.

 

Side Effects:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Chest discomfort
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Itching or rash
  • Pale skin
  • Yellow colored eyes or skin
  • Decreased interest in sexual intercourse
  • Unexpected weight gain or loss
  • Throat irritation

Interactions:

  1. Interaction with Medicines: Moderate to severe interactions with Azathioprine, Theophylline.
  2. Interaction with Diseases:
    Secondary Hyperuricemia: This medicine is not recommended in the patients with malignant disease, tumor lysis syndrome or Lesch-Nyhan syndrome where uric acid levels are highly elevated.

Contraindications:

  • Allergy

Warnings:

  1. Gout flare: Gout flares may occur after initiation of the treatment due to change in the serum uric acid levels. Discontinue the treatment until the symptoms completely subsided. Simultaneously gout flare prophylaxis with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or colchicine should be initiated for up to 6 months.
  2. Cardiovascular events: This medicine in not recommended in the patients with ischemic heart disease due to the risk of cardiovascular thromboembolic events like myocardial infarction, stroke.
  3. Impaired liver function: This medicine is known to cause liver failure. Obtain baseline of liver function tests before initiation of the treatment. The treatment should be discontinued if the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is greater than 3 times the reference range.
  4. Impaired kidney function: This medicine should be used with caution in the patients with severe kidney injury (CrCl less than 30 ml/min).
  5. Asymptomatic hyperuricemia: This medicine is not recommended for use in the patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia.
  6. Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Consult your doctor about the potential benefits and risks before deciding to take this medicine.
  7. Lactation: No clear data is available about the presence of this medicine in the human breast milk. Consult your doctor about the potential benefits and risks before deciding to take this medicine.
  8. Safety with alcohol: Interaction with alcohol is unknown. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption.

 

General Instructions:

  • Take tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller quantities than recommended.
  • The treatment should be started at lower doses and increase the dose gradually based on the response.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without informing your doctor.

Storage Conditions:

  • Store at 20° to 25° C.
  • Keep out of the direct sunlight.
  • Keep medicines out of the reach of children.
